Outside Lands Festival

Stellar weekend at the Outside Lands Festival this past weekend in Golden Gate Park. Thanks to my aunt, Kerri and I were able to escape to San Fran for a 4-day weekend in wine and music paradise. We were able to meet up with friends from near and far.

Highlights at OSL included Widespread Panic, ALO, Grace Potter. Quote of the weekend courtesy of Primus' Les Claypool - "San Fran, we're gonna knock some dust off the classics since many of them were written right down the street from here."

Claypool's quote made me think, where were all of the classic San Fran bands this past weekend? Where were members of the Grateful Dead? Where was Santana? Where were those that helped create the origianl SF music scene? They were truly missed and made me ultimately feel that this thing was too far down the path of $$ versus true roots of music and celebration.

Other criticisms include the fact that after 3 days of music, a very short half day on Friday (for the same price of Saturday and Sunday) felt like a ripoff. It was great to check Radiohead off the list, but they aren't really on my musical taste radar. Nevermind the fact that I spent 45 minutes waiting in a line for a beer missing the entire Beck set, Friday sure was a money grab.

Jazz Fest Late Night Shows

Scherer scored several photo passes courtesy of Jambase...some of the treats include these - Robert Walters (with Bucky and I serving cameo) on the Creole River Queen; Galactic 3:30 a.m. home at Tipps; and Warren Haynes with Bela Fleck serving as one of the many sit-ins that night.
Special thanks to Jason Colton at Red Light for the Gov't Mule set-up.

Whales Outside the Hotel in PV

We had a once in a lifetime experience of watching a school of whales playing right out in the Bay of our hotel. At one time, we saw all 4 whales jump out of the water. Unfortunately, we didn't catch that one in a photo, but here are a couple that Scherer did catch with the long lens.

Phoenix Open Sat & Sun of SB Weekend

All day Friday and all day Saturday Scherer, my dad and I took in the Phoenix Open. This place is nuts. It is a loud golf tournament. We didn't really move away from the 16th hole - 153 yard Par 3 that is literally enclosed in a stadium type atmosphere. It is called the 'Loudest Hole in Golf". The gallery actually boos players that don't hit the green. There is always a buzz at this hole - never, every quiet. I am not sure how these guys do it - except to try to just get out of there with par and move on. Again, my old man hooked us up with the primo tickets. Thanks dad.

Maxim Super Bowl Party

Thanks to Jessica M at Fingerprint, Scherer, Jen, Fred and I were able to take in the legendary Maxim party. We met up with the fellas from SIRIUS for some celeb watching and heavy drinking. The set-up was legendary with a pool and stage in the pool. As always, a first class operation by the crew behind Maxim's epic party planning committee. A shout out to Dan Parente who provided me my very first Maxim SB Party experience way back in Houston (and many others after that).

When we entered the check-in area, there was a surreal experience. There were five different lines to choose from when you arrived - VIPS, guests, sponsors, invited, and one other. In each line, there were about 10 people waiting, with the exception of the invited line. The invited line stretched 700 deep - and every one of those 700 were ladies 18-24 dressed in their Saturday night best. Unfortunately, we didn't get a photo of this, but needless to say, it was one of the craziest things I have ever seen and was just wishing that I had a buddy or two that was a bachelor with us that night. He would have had fun.

Celebs spotted by our crew: Nick Faldo, Ian Baker Finch, Larry David, P Diddy and at this point, 15 others I can't remember.

14-3 Buckeyes - The Dominant Force

I can't sum up the Ohio State Michigan game in one word, in fact, I can't sum it up in one post, but here is a shot at it:

  • LLLLLLoyd Carr - we will miss you. We were confident that not even you could get these Michigan players to respond to the biggest game in their Michigan career. I guess you should have announced your resignation before the game - to attempt to inspire them more. (Btw - your retirement press conference had people asleep in it).
  • Ohio State was dominant on both sides of the line.
  • I forgot that it could actually rain for 4 hours straight while it was 35 degrees.
  • Mike Hart - the single biggest mouth in the history of NCCA athletics went home 0-4 and has and never will win a big game in his college football career. Sure glad you left millions on the table this year to come back and 'Beat Ohio State' Mike. How did that turn out for you?
  • Chad Henne - perhaps the MVP for Ohio State for the game. You just knew when he was in the game, Michigan had no chance.
  • Jake Long - hey pal, at least you don't open your mouth. Then again, you did just get owned by Vernon and Ironhead. Top 5 pick eh?
  • The fact that I saw a number of "Mike Hart for Heisman" t-shirts being worn on game day brought out a chuckle (and plenty of ammunition for hazing and taunting).
  • I am pretty sure everyone around me was tired of hearing me cheer loud for Chad Henne. He was my favorite player on the field during gameday.
  • Jim Tressel is still one of the top 3 coaches in all of college football. Illinois had me scratching my head, but Tressel showed yet again that he can inspire and will a team to win - especially on the biggest stage of the year.
  • If you can't take the heat, why show up? I wasn't surprised, but it still puzzles me that a Michigan fan would show up in the stadium and be shocked to hear an OSU fan sling some mud across the bow. You all lost to Appalachian state dude.
  • Scherer was confronted by a 60-year old man who was ready to throw fists to defend his pathetic Michigan team's performance. He was later sucker punched by the 60-year old man's son. Class, nothing but class Michigan fan.
  • Immediately following the game, Scherer and I were surrounded by approximately 10 Michigan fans that wanted to take out some of their frustration on the 'OSU section leaders' in Section 34 Row 22. Thankfully, there still are some educated Michigan fans that do attend the game.
  • On the way out the door, I still had Michigan fans hazing me about the Illinois loss. This after their "national championship senior starters" put up 97 offensive yards total. Hey Michigan fan - time to start working on your post-game loss hazing skills.

This sums up the intelligence level north of the Ohio state line. More to come....

Marriage in the Mountains

A photo of Scherer's car with a special little present plastered on the side of it.

Josh and Kelly Mariea were married in Breckenridge, CO this weekend. Weddings are always a great time to catch up with old friends, but also provide an opportunity to re-live my wedding day. Although Kerri wasn't able to attend, I was constantly reminded why I married her. From watching my friends with their wives/girlfriends to watching friends of mine interact with their kids, it reinforced the fact that I found someone special.

The view from the deck where Josh and Kelly were married.

Scherer Gets Published

My boy Jay Scherer(http://www.jayzscherer.com/) had his photography from the last SCI run ever at Red Rocks published by one of my favorite music sites Jambase.com. Catch his piece here: http://www.jambase.com/headsup.asp?storyID=11204

Many thanks to Carrie Lombardi and the SCI Fidelity crew to taking care of Jay during the past few years.
Damn I wish I was able to hit these shows....these guys put on a show that was pure energy..never wanting to sit down - even hours after they played their final encore. They will be missed and I sure hope Keller plays with these guys - at least one tour a year.

Best of luck Billy! You and the boys will be missed!

Nice work Scherer!

Tribe Extend Choke Jobs for All Fans

Great news out of Cleveland today.....they have extended the contract of Eric Wedge. The Indians, if you recall, were picked by many experts last year to run away with the AL Central, only to be completely dominated and runover by the Tigers.

And now that the Tribe have set themselves up yet again for their annual 2nd half collapse, the Tribe has gone out and rewarded the manager.

I predict Tribe loser fan (Scherers of the world) will be begging Mike Hargrove to come out of retirement at the end of this year.
